Aintree’s Grand National meeting begins on Thursday with the Grade 1 races looking tricky, and neither David nor I want to go in gung-ho on the opening day with questions of how horses who have run at Cheltenham will fare to consider, and the extent of the rain still appears a bit of a mystery.
The Betway Bowl sees Gold Cup third Protektorat takes on the fifth-placed finisher in Royale Pagaille, but both of those had a hard race three weeks ago, and preference in the Pointers office (this week it’s a skip at the back of the Adelphi, but it serves our needs) is for ELDORADO ALLEN, who ran a much better race in the Ryanair than the simple facts would suggest, with Brendan Powell pretty much the only jockey willing to throw down the gauntlet to Allaho, as others sought to pick up the pieces.
Eldorado Allen will likely go forward again here, and he was full value for beating Royale Pagaille in the Denman Chase at Newbury on his penultimate start. He appears to be thriving at present, and can give backers a bold run for their money, with Sky Bet’s four places the clincher.
