First race to catch the eye on a fine card at Sandown on Friday is the Betfair Daily Rewards Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase. He’s attracted support, and It’s possible to argue the well-bred Halo Des Obeaux is well treated on his hurdles third to I Like To Move It at Worcester, but I think he’s flattered by that effort against a rival whose jumping was poor on the day, and a fall at Newton Abbot last time is hardly what you want to see when tackling fences for the first time, especially at a proper jumping test like Sandown.
I’d much rather go with MAHLER’S PROMISE, who has shown himself very useful over fences already and put in a smashing round here last month when only finding the prolific Minella Trump too good over C&D when a selection here. He’s a sound jumper of fences, who took well to this tricky venue last time, and I loved the way he battled on from the last fence to regain second close home.
I can see him going from the front and putting these to the sword early in the contest, but he doesn’t need to dominate as long as they go a decent gallop. David feels much the same as I do about him, which is a positive, and we’re making him a 2pt bet on that basis.

Do I head south to Leicester or north to Rasen today? Leicester wins in terms of travel time, but the lure of two low-grade chases and the possibility of some excellent sausages for lunch mean Rasen is currently priced 1/3 (max a tenner).
The first of those chases takes place at 1.52, and while paper favourite Begoodtoyourself is doing little wrong and probably deserves a win, he keeps getting nudged up the weights without winning, and this ground promises to be slow enough for him if the forecast rain arrives. He’s still a maiden after eighteen starts and when all’s said and done, that’s enough to make me look elsewhere at the price.
But where do you look? Dallas Cowboy might have been interesting at a track he likes had he had a couple of starts to get him fit, but he’s no great record fresh and that’s a worry. Similar comments apply to Torrent Des Mottes and Newberry New, and it’s a couple of first-time chasers that make mosty appeal.
I find Tom Lacey a hard trainer to read, but after a break (and with the addition of a tongue-tie) might be the time to catch Nocte Volatus, bred to make a chaser but his form over hurdles is very patchy. At twice the price I’d rather chance Paul Webber’s GUMBO FLYER, who is a big unit, made to jump fences and if he can recapture his useful bumper form he’d have a great chance in a modest race.
Cheekpieces are swapped for blinkers for his return and if he takes to the job, might prove good enough.

This is a competitive 7f handicap, but while we both have obvious reservations, Tommy Taylor caught the attention here based on his course form. By far his best run since joining Edwin Tuer from Ireland was a close fourth over C&D a few runs back after a slow start. He’s not been suited by soft turf in three subsequent runs, and is now 4lb lower than for that good effort, while his lifetime record away from soft ground in Class 4 races at this trip reads 1232.
The problem is his losing run, and what a run! His last win came more than four years ago in a Listed race at York, and such runs tend not to be coincidences. The bottom line is that his form when conditions are right is holding up well, and he ought to go well if getting away on terms. We’d only want to back him each-way, though, and with the dead eight runners declared, I’d leave bets as late as possible to avoid the punters’ nightmare of a late withdrawal.

It’s a case of one more chance for Honda Fifty in the Every Race Live On Racing TV Handicap Hurdle. The son of Arakan is easily the pick of these based on bumper form, and he’s had plausible excuses over hurdles to date. He looked to need the run after an absence at Hexham recently, making headway after the penultimate flight, but tiring up the final climb, while the form of his second to Foster’s Island in the spring looks much better in retrospect. He couldn’t live with Micky Hammond’s gelding at Carlisle in February, but that horse has won three handicaps since, the most recent a week ago off a 22lb higher mark than he was racing off at Carlisle.
Honda Fifty went handicapping after two qualifying runs, and has still had just the five outings over timber, with that second-place finish the best guide to his merits. He had his other rivals well beaten on that occasion, and a lack of late support on his return indicates that he was expected to benefit from the run. That’s my reading, and if I’m correct, he could make a mockery of his current rating of 97, which is 5lb lower than for the Carlisle effort.
