Here’s today’s selection

13.15 – Ffos Las – Poldark Cross

In the Cazoo Novices’ Handicap Chase, it may be worth risking POLDARK CROSS despite a disappointing effort in his chase debut at Bangor.

The gelding, who races in the same colours as Decoupage, that smashing jumper of Charlie Egerton’s, shaped much better than the result after a bad mistake mid-race, and probably wasn’t as fit as envisaged.

He has already shown himself a mudlark, with form figures on testing ground of 1232, including a win in a heavy-ground point. It’s been a bad year for Harry Whittington, with just 15 winners to his name since the start of December last year, but on the plus side, three of those have come in the last month, from just a dozen runners.

That would suggest that the talented trainer is about to turn a corner, and his stable is well worth following.

Here’s today’s selection

16.00 – Newcastle – Lukoutoldmakezebak – 0.5pts Each-Way

Getting with LUKOUTOLDMAKEZEBAK takes a bit of a leap of faith, given he’s beaten just a handful of horses home on his last six starts but before you run off, there are reasons for thinking he might be worth a swing at a big each-way price here.

We’ll happily admit he’s looked on the downgrade this year, but you’ve only got to go back to May to find him winning off a mark of 49 at Catterick, so while he gives his running sparingly these days, he can still win when in the mood. He’d have needed his run here last time after a two-month break, and historically he’s got the best course form in the race, winning three times at this level, and making the frame a further seven times over 7f/1m. He came to hand very quickly after a break last year, only beaten a head after finishing well beaten at Wolverhampton, so with the yard back in form (three runners at Southwell the other day produced two winners and a second at 40/1, 7/2 and 12/1), and with a good draw in stall 13 to work from, then if there’s ever a time to give him a go, it’s probably now.

Here’s today’s selection

13.15 – Cheltenham – Royaume Uni

Some disagreement on the first bet, I have to reveal. For all that he disappointed on the Flat at Newmarket last time, I’m sweet on the chances of ROYAUME UNI in the Catesby Handicap Hurdle, but David (‘a Gary Moore drifter? A GARY MOORE DRIFTER?!!’) is not so keen, for all we both liked the horse last season.

Moore’s 4-y-o son of Galileo is a strong traveller that still looks very well handicapped on the best of his Flat form, and he won easily at Plumpton on his latest hurdles start in what was a very smart time for conditions.

He caught a tartar in the shape of Herbiers at Ascot in March when receiving just 5lb. Herbiers is now rated over a stone higher after two subsequent wins, and although Royaume Uni is himself 10lb higher, that looks fully justified, and he ought to be winning races off his current mark given the impression he’s made to date, and the fact that he remains unexposed.

He could be a Betfair Hurdle contender in the spring – a race his trainer has done very well in over the years.

Free Tip – Another good run looks on the cards.

Here’s today’s selection

3.40 – Taunton – Flutiste

Later on the Taunton card, Claire Harris can get her name on the board courtesy of the consistent Flutiste. who holds better claims than the majority in the Taunton Racecourse Business Club Handicap Hurdle.

The 6-y-o gelding has done most of his racing over shorter, but kept on well when runner-up to the improved In Rem at Exeter last time, and the step up to 2m7f looks likely to suit.

The winner of the Exeter race has scored impressively since, and Flutiste holds Freddy Fanatapan on that form, and he had a trio of her rivals behind on his previous start when third at Chepstow. Another good run looks on the cards, and he can belatedly shed his maiden status.

Here’s today’s selection

13.00 Ludlow – Ambion Hill

Best bet of the day is Colin Tizzard’s AMBION HILL in the G. C. Rickards Novices’ Handicap Chase.

The son of Getaway ran well despite doing too much in front in desperate weather at Exeter on his return over hurdles. He faded late to be fourth there, with the others who dominated the finish having largely raced off the early pace, and while he was a weak finisher at times last term, he fared much the best of those who raced on or near the early pace at Exeter, and I thought he kept on well in the circumstances.

Luckily, so did the boy Massey, so we’re doubling up on the one we both reckon ought to be clear favourite in a low-grade event.

Ambion Hill is a rangy sort whose dam is an unraced half-sister to National Hunt Chase third Prudent Honour, and he’s an athletic jumper of a hurdle who appeals as the type to improve for a switch to the bigger obstacles.

His current mark is potentially lenient having dropped 16lb since first handicapped over the smaller obstacles, with his disappointing efforts in that sphere coinciding with the period when his yard was struggling. As a six-year-old, he’s entitled to do better if finding fences suiting him as expected, and could well be much better than this level of competition.

There doesn’t appear to be much pace pressure despite the field size, and he is taken to get off the mark with plenty in his favour, including the continued form of his trainer and jockey.

On that note, it’s great to see that Brendan Powell has pretty much nailed his place as stable jockey for the Tizzard yard after a host of big names were linked to the role.
