There are a couple of progressive staying hurdlers in this field, but with the ground sure to be riding deep for the first time at Newbury in a while, I’d fancy BEAUPORT to relish the conditions more than main market rival Masters Legacy.
Beauport, who races in the colours made famous by 1983 Grand National winner Corbiere, and is very much in that mould, being a thorough stayer who promises to be even better when pointed at a fence next season. He’s no mean hurdler, however, and ground it out impressively in the EBF Novices’ Hurdle Final at Sandown in March to go firmly in the notebook, and he matched that form when 1½ lengths second of 10 to Jesuitique in a conditional jockeys’ handicap there on his return in early November, with Champagne Court a further 3½ lengths behind him in third.
The pair he split at Sandown have both won handicap hurdles subsequently, making a 3lb rise for that effort look very fair indeed, while the slightly longer trip at this galloping trip is also a positive. Jordan Nailor again takes the ride, and Beauport is well up to defying his new mark, while remaining one to do better again when his stamina is drawn out further.

I made the point of mentioning PRAIRIE TOWN when he ran here a couple of weeks ago, with the argument that he’d be of considerably more interest if he turned up after Christmas with the cheekpieces back on; lo and behold, he turns up here for a race he won two years ago (from a mark 12lb higher) with the headgear reapplied, so he’s worth a bet given this looks to have been the plan all along.
He ran perfectly well here on his reappearance over a trip too short back in November and the step up in trip ought to have suited him last time, but there wasn’t a penny piece around for him and he ran as the market suggested.
That was much the case before he won this in 2019, so it isn’t something to be worried about, and I expect to see money for him in the morning.

Monday looks a great day’s racing, losing little in comparison to St Stephen’s Day on either side of the Irish Sea, and the card at Chepstow on Welsh Grand National day is a credit to the executive, who are forced to run behind closed doors for a second successive year.
That’s a shame, but the racing is well worth a detailed look, despite the competition elsewhere.
The Watch Racing Online Free With Coral Handicap Chase is hugely competitive, but gives the frustrating ZAMBEZI FIX another chance to take advantage of a lenient mark. Bernard Llewellyn’s grey was travelling best when falling at Ffos Las in November, and was the only horse to put up a fight against the impressive Samarrive in a Listed Handicap Hurdle at Sandown last time.
He typically finished off well there and will appreciate the return to this extended trip. He makes mistakes over fences, but still regularly shows useful form and if he can avoid such errors, he can show himself to be a fair bit better than his mark.
There are a number of obvious dangers, but the one I’m most worried about is an outsider. Flagrant Delitiep progressed markedly when put over fences last season, relishing the mud when winning at Wincanton and Hereford, and denied a treble by the missing of fences at the former track in February. Unlike Zambezi Fix, he’s a notably fluent jumper, and is likely to have needed both starts this season after a break.

Jacamar shaped with plenty of promise at Wincanton last time, He came with what looked a winning run between the last two fences, only to not see the stride at the last, and that probably cost him the race.
He rallied well on the run-in and was carried off his line by the winner, Our Power, which hardly helped his cause either. He’s only 2lb higher here, which is very fair given the front pair pulled clear, and now the cheekpieces go on, which may help him concentrate his jumping.

Yet to fire fully after a move from Noel Meade to Jennie Candlish, but he was not at all hard ridden when a respectable seventh at Wetherby early this month, and the handicapper has been quick to drop him to a workable mark of 122. He had a similar Irish mark when winning a rated novice hurdle – a handicap in all but name – at Kilbeggan in the spring, and that race has worked out well.
He’d make slightly more appeal with headgear given his win came in blinkers, but his stable are showing signs of a return to form, and he’s a better chance than the market makes out.

My idea of the best bet in East Lothian is a longstanding maiden hurdler, and that rather sets the tone for the day. Enlighten went agonisingly close to winning a jumpers’ bumper at Newcastle in January, and he’s improved a little with each of three starts since returning to hurdles in October. His best effort over hurdles to date came when a good third to El Jefe in a handicap at Sedgefield 17 days ago, and a repeat of that may well be good enough to win the Bet at racingtv.com Handicap Hurdle from the same mark.
Enlighten is often held up in his races, but his best efforts, including a bumper win at Kelso and that close second at Newcastle last winter, have come when he’s made the running, and that is the key to him here. There is a real shortage of pace in this, and Jamie Hamilton has a chance to boss things if he’s got his wits about him.

As seems often the case these days, they’re ain’t a fat lot we can agree on on a Saturday, but on the plus side, the two we do agree on are both a big price, so we can at least take a couple of small swipes at today’s racing without doing a lot of damage if we’re wrong.
The Long Walk is a case in point. It’s a shame we aren’t going to see Buzz line up after his injury sustained on the gallops earlier in the week, as this division is still open and he could have been a contender. Thyme Hill has a terrific chance if you look at his overall body of form, but whether you now want to take 7/4 after a poor effort in Auteuil’s Grand Prix D’Automne is quite another point. Champ can’t be backed if Nicky Henderson’s home reports are to be believed, although rumours of a possible fall during schooling might explain the switch back to hurdling.
If you are asking us for the most likely winner, then Ronald Pump looks the answer. There was nothing wrong with his good second to Honeysuckle at Fairyhouse, and if he gets a better run at it this year, he ought to have his chance at the Stayers title come March.
