The Happy Retirement Captain Nick Lees Handicap Chase gives an excellent opportunity for old favourite JACAMAR to return to winning ways after respectable efforts left handed in better races since he landed the nap at Kempton on Boxing Day.
Jacamar is not the scopiest, and has made a few minor errors in recent races, including when winning, but Leicester ought to be easier for him to handle that the tough jumping tests at Warwick and Cheltenham on his last two starts, and his best efforts over the larger obstacles have come at right-handed tracks. He remains very fairly weighted off a mark just 1lb higher than when winning that valuable televised handicap at Kempton, and he will take plenty of beating with Leicester’s long straight and stiff finish ideal for his come-from-behind tactics. He’s a confident shout, all things considered.

RHUBARB BIKINI is a horribly inconsistent performer, but he is capable of fairly useful form when getting his own way, and some of his poor runs have come at trips he doesn’t stay.
When confining his efforts to races over a mile in class 4/5 company, his record isn’t too shabby, reading: 211348166. His handicap wins have come in 0-75 and 0-78 company, and this is effectively a 0-78 with top weight Dembe having that rating.
He tends to sulk when headed, and is better than poor recent form figures imply having done just that. He has a chance to dominate down in class here, and may prove hard to pass if he’s in the right mood.

On the subject of the generous allowance given to four-year-olds, it may be worth having a small swing at QUEENIE NEWALL, who was a fairly useful winner on good ground for Hugo Palmer on the Flat, and goes handicapping for the back-to-form Gavin Cromwell in a moderate race here.
She’s not shown much, but that’s easy to forgive given the yard hasn’t been firing, and she would have been campaigned with handicaps in mind. 25/1 looks fair in the circumstances, especially with extra places on offer.

I fancy that the going at Newbury on Friday will be close to heavy, putting the emphasis firmly on stamina at the galloping Berkshire venue. It’s no place for short runners at the best of times, but especially when the going becomes testing.
My idea of the best bet comes in the very first race, and the West Berkshire Mencap Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle can go the way of the Nigel Twiston-Davies runner TOP OF THE BILL, who showed useful form in bumpers, with his best efforts coming on heavy ground. He’s not reached the same level over hurdles as yet, but has been campaigned with an eye on handicaps, qualifying for this after a pair of fourth-place finishes, while he has been running on better ground in those runs. With his yard remaining in rude health (Sergeant Wilson a wide-margin winner at Ludlow on Thursday), and the rain playing in his favour, he’s expected to show improved form in this sphere, and can make a winning handicap bow.
