On the all-weather, we’re taking a swing with the erstwhile disappointing TROMSO, who was an excellent third to Raadobarg at Leicester last season, and who has failed to stay further subsequently, leaving Kevin Ryan to join Ruth Carr before the start of the new season.
He is exactly the sort of horse that Ruth Carr does well with, and having needed the run in a race which has worked out very well on his return, he has a chance to make the running against lesser opposition here. Whether he will need more time to get acclimatised to his new regime is a question to ponder, but I believe he is on a workable mark if Carr can turn him around mentally, and I can’t ignore him at the prices. He will come good, I’m convinced, it’s just a matter of when.

The case for him is a relatively simple one. He’s been disappointing on the all-weather on his last three starts but it might simply be the case that he’s nowhere near as good on artificial surfaces as he is on turf.
However, he’s dropped 7lb for those three runs and is now 11lb lower than his close fifth in a better grade than this at Windsor last year. A reproduction of that would take him close, and it’s worth bearing in mind he won here on good ground as a 2yo.
Chepstow is a happy hunting ground for Eve Johnson Houghton with 17 winners from 77 runners equating to a healthy 22% strike-rate, and the Blewbury trainer had had four winners in the past fortnight, with her runners generally exceeding market expectations, so there’s plenty to like about his chance at the price.

Gelded very early on in his career, his form after a 100+ day break since then reads 115, and the fifth was a decent effort on his seasonal debut at Doncaster last year. He was only beaten half a length from a 12lb higher mark over this C&D last September so is clearly well handicapped, and with the solid pace he needs to come off looking likely with Araifjan in the field, he really ought to be hitting the frame here at worst.

Brighton’s rollercoaster gets its first outing of the season and the card is the main focus for us on the Pointers today.
The one that jumped off the page in this 7f handicap is Jim Boyle’s Otago, who warmed up for this with a run over 6f at Lingfield at the end of March, a trip that’s on the short side for him these days (both wins last year came at 7f). Held up in rear and outpaced at a key time, he then stayed on steadily in the final furlong and gave the overall impression that not only would the run bring him on (it was his first since the autumn) but a win wasn’t that far away either.
Now 2lb lower than his last winning mark, he’s yet to win at Brighton but acts on the track, and two wins at Epsom show that he goes well on a camber. Plenty in his favour here, with jockey Pat Cosgrave in good form, and we’d have him nearer the front of the market.
