Here’s today’s selection

2:13 Hamilton – Lady Lade

The best bet on Monday comes in the Joseph Leckie & Sons Ltd Handicap, where LADY LADE can take advantage of some lenient handicapping.

Keith Dalgleish’s three-year-old has an excellent record here, winning her novice over C&D last season, and placed twice in 6f handicaps here in June, when seeming to find her stamina stretched. Those placed efforts came in Class 4 company, and after losing her way mid-summer, she has dropped in the weights, and came back to form dropped in trip and class at Ayr last time, finishing an excellent third of 21 to Triple Jaye, beaten just a neck and half a length.

Lady Lade pretty much proved what the form suggests at Ayr, that is that she is best at the minimum trip, and her record at the trip now reads 5113. The ‘5’ came on her debut at Carlisle on soft ground, and she shaped very well despite needing the experience that day, keeping on for hand riding to be beaten 2¼ lengths after missing the break from a wide draw.

She built on that to win her next two starts at 5f, but it wasn’t until the Western Meeting at Ayr that she was tried again at the trip. The fact that she bounced straight back to form at Ayr augurs well, and while it can be argued that she’s unproven on the ground, her only runs on such a surface have come without the benefit of a prep run, and she’s performed perfectly well in the circumstances.

Lady Lade showed she could be competitive from marks in the mid-70s before her temporary dip in form and returns to a track she handles well off a mark of 68 now, which to my mind looks like a golden opportunity, particularly with a draw in 9 looks a positive, with Shesadabber likely to make the running from 11, and that in-form mare should give us the perfect tow deep into the race.

Here’s today’s selection

2:40 Haydock – Speycaster

Sprint Cup day at Haydock was marred by a raft of withdrawals due to firm ground, with the unfortunate Kirkland Tellwright having to field questions as to why he hadn’t watered, in a change to the usual schedule at the Newton-Le-Willows venue, when Kirkland is expected to field angry questions about why he HAS watered. It’s a funny old game, sometimes.

On the bright side, the rain has arrived on Thursday to ensure Tellwright is blameless, and the going should be on the soft side of good for Friday’s card. That is good news for my nap of the day, who was one of those non-runners at the last meeting when strongly fancied.

SPEYCASTER was much better than the bare result when fourth in a similar race here on his most recent start, and the son of Highland Reel can strike in first-time blinkers. Ralph Beckett has run 15 horses in blinkers for the first time this year, saddling four winners at 5/1, 7/1, 15/2 and 17/2, the latest of which came just a week ago. Another five of those runners have finished second, making the headgear look a huge positive for him when he lines up in the Haldane Fisher Handicap.

Speycaster was a little unlucky here last time, stumbling as he left the stalls, and that left him poorly positioned. I was impressed by the way he was able to work his way back into the race, and while he couldn’t pose a win threat, he did sterling late work to grab fourth in a deep field.

He did carry his head a little awkwardly there, and the headgear looks a sound move, while his previous disappointing run at York came at a time when a lot of the stable’s runners were disappointing, and his reappearance effort at Nottingham was full of promise.

Here’s today’s selection

3:40 Ayr – Tinto

Tinto did us a favour when running a cracker in the Stewards Cup at Goodwood, throwing down a challenge at the furlong pole before not quite seeing it out for fifth. He has ground to make up on Summerghand on the York run but I suspect this has been the target for much of the season, and what really swings it for us is the booking of excellent (and in-form) claimer Mark Winn, who takes a valuable 7lb off his back, and we can see him getting on well with Tinto today.

Here’s today’s selection

1:50 Sandown – Phoenix Star

Cases can easily be made for the majority in this race, but it’s PHOENIX STAR who boasts the most compelling claims, despite arriving here on a 21-race losing run.

The 6-y-o shared the spoils in a significantly stronger handicap than this over C&D last summer and his recent near miss at Newcastle suggested that he’s ready strike.

Here’s today’s selection

3:28 Redcar – Cosmos Raj

Best bet on Tuesday comes at Redcar where the ground should ride good but no quicker, and that is excellent news for backers of COSMOS RAJ in the Join RacingTV Today Handicap. The selection caught the eye despite finishing last at Ripon last time on ground described by Timeform as good to firm, but his record on good through soft is excellent, and the easier surface gives him a big chance from the pick of the draw in this 1¼m handicap.

Cosmos Raj has a career record over 1m+ on ground described by Timeform as good, good to soft or soft which reads 12251221321. He is dropping in grade after shaping well for a long way at Ripon last time – looked a big threat with just over a furlong to go, and Jason Watson was very easy on him when his winning chance had gone – and looks to have a touch of class in this.

The selection was beaten by Western Stars at Pontefract in the summer, and that horse heads the market. On a strict reading of that form, he should confirm placings, but, Cosmos Raj did too much too soon on that occasion, allowing Western Stars to reel him in late, and I fancy him to turn the tables under a less aggressive ride.
