Captain Westie (2.15 Hex)

In the Horslyx Supporting Hexham Racecourse Maiden Hurdle, I was keen to be against odds-on favourite Camdonian, who should win on the form he showed on hurdles debut at Chepstow last season, but who has been beaten at short odds in three subsequent starts, and isn’t one for maximum faith having somehow conspired to get beaten here on his penultimate start having looked all over the winner everywhere bar the line.

Preference is for CAPTAIN WESTIE, who has been second in a bumper for Shark Hanlon and in a point for Tom Malone. He was odds-on for his defeat between the flags, but was conceding plenty of weight to the winner Park This One, who has won a novice hurdle and finished a good fourth in the Grade 2 Winter Novices’ Hurdle at Sandown last week.

Captain Westie has since joined the yard of Jimmy Moffatt, who has an excellent record with horses joining from other yards, with five of 13 such horses winning on their first start for the yard, and providing a €660 profit to a tenner at SP.

2:05 Aintree – Dr Kananga

When looking for the winner of this, a good place to start is with something that jumps solidly and is likely to be on the front end from the get-go. Ben Clarke’s ex-pointer Dr Kananga fits the bill on both those counts, and he looked a progressive sort last year, winning easily at Sandown in February by 12 lengths and 11 lengths and the two that finished behind him both won next time out.

He jumped out to his left there and did the same when Exeter later in the season, and there’s a good chance he will be even better going left-handed today. He looked in need of the run at Bangor over hurdles last month, finding only a progressive Maximilian too good, and ought to have more to offer this season.

It’s intriguing that the Gerry Feilden was never under consideration for Constitution Hill, and I suspect that’s because Nicky Henderson was very happy with the shape of the race, which he should dominate. To clarify, this would have looked a penalty kick for Constitution Hill, who would have seen most of his rivals out of the weights, and/or running for cover, so Nicky must have been keen on the chances of either First Street or Theatre Glory – or both.

Henderson has won this twice with mares in recent years, and I prefer Theatre Glory of his pair. Some will assume she is the neglected of the pair given she’s ridden by a conditional claiming 7lb, but I see it differently. Nathan Brennan rode her well when winning at Kelso in the spring and is back on having been unable to claim at Cheltenham in Listed company. She looks well weighted, remains open to improvement, and will surely go close.
