RAE DES CHAMPS looks potentially well-in for the Painshawfield Handicap Hurdle. The daughter of Robin des Champs made a winning handicap debut at Musselburgh last season, but ran better still when second to subsequent Listed winner Theatre Glory at Kelso on her final start.
She gave the impression on both those starts that she would do better granted a stiffer test, and while she’s only upped in trip by around a furlong compared to Kelso, the stiffer track and softer ground are very much to her advantage. She’s been off since March, but Rose Dobbin’s horses are usually best caught fresh, and I’d be surprised if fitness was an issue.
She’s just 1lb higher for that eye-catching run behind Theatre Glory, and is readily preferred to Spantik, who ran really well at Sedgefield last time, but seems to save his best efforts for that track (this meeting was due to be at Sedgefield, but has been moved for safety reasons).

APOLLO ONE can finally come good after a series of solid efforts, and he’s weighted to do best of a few of these who clashed over C&D last week. He was nailed late by the more patiently ridden Aramis Grey that day, but is 5lb better off for a neck, and he’s well drawn to control the pace.
If Richard Kingscote can hold on to him for slightly longer, then he can gain his revenge, and a repeat of his latest run would see him right at the forefront of this field. The money has come for Strike Red, who caught the eye making late headway behind the selection last time, but he’ll need plenty of luck in running and I think the market has over-reacted to his admittedly eye-catching run.

Not actually that many you can fancy for the Badger Beer this year. It goes without saying Frodon would bring the Wincanton house down if he won, and the handicapper has certainly given him a chance, but there were some signs age might be catching up last year. Respected, of course, but there are alternatives…
I’m keen on Lord Accord, who rather went under the radar when scoring at Cheltenham last month, only getting a 5lb rise for an easy enough win. He jumped well there, which will be a real asset today, and given he’s likely to be prominent from the off, he has an ideal profile for this.

The Haldon Gold Cup looks a very good opportunity for Arkle fourth WAR LORD to get his new season off to the best start. A winner on chase debut at Carlisle a year ago, he progressed well for all he fell just short at the top level, but it was encouraging that even when facing a stiff task at Cheltenham, he did not shirk and ran right up to his best.
His handicap mark is very fair in regards to races like this, and while Greaneteen is reported as fitter than when beaten in this race last season, he remains vulnerable off his big weight.
I’m unconvinced by Third Time Lucki’s stamina for this extended 2m1f, while Dolos reserves his best for his spring visits to Sandown these days.
All in all, War Lord, for whom this trip will suit better than shorter, looks a cracking bet at around 2/1, and ought to be nearer evens.

There was barely a dry eye in the house last week as Ornate rolled back the years to fight off Angle Land (reopposes here) and the rest here last week. The veteran seemed in terminal decline in the summer, but that win shows that the fire still burns at the age of nine.
He’s got a harder task today, not just because of the 4lb penalty for that – hardly a concern given the level he was capable of a year or so ago – but he faces several other potential front runners, and sadly for him, despite being drawn four, the pace angles are all on his inside, which makes his task look much harder than at first glance.
It does often pay to be up with the pace at Chelmsford but this really does have the potential to fall apart late in the piece, and at a double-figure price I’d be willing to give SHOW ME A SUNSET a spin-up on his first start for the Michaels Murphy and Keady.
It would be fair to say his previous trainer, Robert Cowell, has had a moderate year by his own high stands (just the 14 winners this calendar year, compared to 32 by this time the year before) and a switch of scenery might not do Show For A Sunset any harm at all. Keady and Murphy have a 100% record first time with Cowell cast-offs, winning with both Cooperation and Temple Bruer in August. Show Me A Sunset is without the cheekpieces he’d worn latterly for his old yard, but the two winners mentioned were also in a change of headgear.
Normally Show Me A Sunset’s come-from behind style would mean he’d need a slice of luck, but the forecast strong pace should see this falling into his lap. His Chelmsford record reads 1423, and he is lower in the weights than for any of those efforts.
