The Central Roofing Novices’ Handicap Chase is contested by mainly frustrating types, but one of them has to win, and it’s not too hard to narrow the field.
Long Call tends to find little and is best produced late as others wilt. That’s a problem here as there looks to be a lack of pace other than regular front runner EROS, who can take advantage of a likely easy lead to land a belated first win under rules.
Eros caught the eye in bumpers and over hurdles for Olly Murphy when racing in the colours of Jared Sullivan, but gave the impression that a breathing problem was compromising his finishing, and connections cut their losses before he went handicapping.
A half-brother to Bouvreuil and Messire des Obeaux, he’s certainly entitled to do better, and his form over fences last season for Kayley Woollacott was solid, and he would probably have won on his final start at Wincanton but for falling at the second last.

For all the quality jump racing on show today, Wolverhampton (as it often does on a Saturday) might provide the best bets, and Civil Law is the one that catches the eye in this 9½f handicap.
After winning twice for Brian Ellison in 2021, it took new trainer Roger Teal to work out how to get the best out of him and bringing him here to Wolverhampton last January proved the catalyst. He went close to winning three races on the bounce, only denied a neck on the second occasion, and clearly acts well here. He did find life harder after that, racing in a couple of tough turf handicaps, but as a result he’s back down to a winning mark here and given we know he well fresh, the 105-day break he’s had is no bad thing. Drawn nicely to track the pace in stall 2, he’s every chance of giving Roger Teal his second winner this week.

It’s BOTHWELL BRIDGE that catches the eye on his reappearance here, as first time up may well be the time to be with him.
He looked a novice chaser of some potential when jumping well and scoring with a bit in hand at Sandown first time up last year, form that looks strong now, with Mahler’s Promise and Bobhopeornohope subsequent winners from the race. After that, though, it all went south, falling early at Kempton on his next start, then finding the ground too soft at Newbury and bursting a blood vessel on his final start of the year.
All of which leaves him on a mark just 3lb higher than the start of last season. This gives him a chance to get his chasing career back on track and start to unlock the potential he showed that day at Sandown.

Nicky Martin’s returners this autumn have generally shaped as if better for a run, with Just Loose Change well beaten at Worcester in September after a break, but a 28/1 winner there four weeks later. My Last Oscar caught the eye at Hereford on Tuesday but faded as if needing the run, and that was also the case with Almost Gotaway at Ffos Las, where he shaped best of all on his handicap debut, only for a lack of peak fitness to find him out from the last.
Almost Gotaway ran very well on his second start over hurdles at Warwick in the spring, leading after the last and overhauled by one coming from further back, and he gives the impression he can develop further with only four lifetime starts to his name.
His trainer believes in a patient approach, and is one to keep on the right side this National Hunt season.

Division two has two of note. It was a better effort here from Hooves Like Jagger last time out, the drop in grade and return to Tapeta both seemingly responsible for the improvement, but stall 14 in the means he’s got a bit on his plate if he’s to record his third all-weather win.
It’s AMOURIE that really catches the eye, however. A winner from just a pound lower at Wolverhampton back in April, she badly needed her comeback run at Newcastle in September but improved plenty on that when staying on nicely into midfield when upped in trip last time.
That run very much resembled her Newcastle effort in February before she won on her next start at Wolverhampton, and Ray Craggs looked to have her primed for a return to winning ways.
The Craggs horses are often ignored in the betting here, but he has a fine course record, with four winners from 24 runners in the last five seasons giving punters a £1,100 profit to £10 stakes at SP; that also augurs well for Amourie’s prospects.
