Wednesday’s racing is again reliant on the all-weather venues coming up trumps, and the Lingfield card makes more appeal than the twilight fixture at Kempton, and which value is very hard to identify. In truth, most of the Lingfield races make pretty much no appeal for punters either, but there are a couple of contests where runners from small, but in-form yards make plenty of appeal, starting with the BetUK’s Acca Club £5 Free Bet Hands And Heels Apprentice Handicap.
SMITH has some pretty awful looking form figures and hopefully that should keep his price up, but he’s got a decent chance of landing this under Billy Loughnane (if Tommo isn’t calling him “The Kid” by February he’s doing it wrong) who is really finding his stride and steals 5lb off Smith’s back today.
All four of his wins for Lydia Richards have come over this C&D, the last of them from a mark a pound lower than today, and he should be approaching peak fitness after a couple of unsuccessful runs over hurdles. You can put a line straight through those efforts, as he has shown no real aptitude for timber-topping, and we expect him to bounce back to form under his optimum conditions today.
It’s a bonus that his trainer has saddled two winners from as many runners in the last four weeks.

It’s tempting to side with sole winner Nat Love, but preference is for the less exposed ISLAND OF SKYE, who has shown a fair level of ability and is taken to give 83-year-old racing legend David Elsworth a belated birthday present. Elsworth, trainer of Desert Orchid and Barnbrook Again among many others equine stars, celebrated his birthday on Monday, and it looks like this horse has been teed up for a handicap from his falling mark, having caught the eye last time.
He was only eighth behind Adace in a better race than this at Kempton on his last start, but jockey John Egan was notably easy on him in the closing stages, and the 3lb drop he got for that allows him to take part in weaker races. I expected him to drop in grade, but the nature of this contest makes it as poor as any 0-50, and he looks capable of showing improved form now that he’s run himself into fitness for George Margarson. It was encouraging to see Kempton fifth Recuerdame win well at Lingfield on Monday, and the prospect of Island of Skye running a big race is growing on me.

It’s intriguing that the Gerry Feilden was never under consideration for Constitution Hill, and I suspect that’s because Nicky Henderson was very happy with the shape of the race, which he should dominate. To clarify, this would have looked a penalty kick for Constitution Hill, who would have seen most of his rivals out of the weights, and/or running for cover, so Nicky must have been keen on the chances of either First Street or Theatre Glory – or both.
Henderson has won this twice with mares in recent years, and I prefer Theatre Glory of his pair. Some will assume she is the neglected of the pair given she’s ridden by a conditional claiming 7lb, but I see it differently. Nathan Brennan rode her well when winning at Kelso in the spring and is back on having been unable to claim at Cheltenham in Listed company. She looks well weighted, remains open to improvement, and will surely go close.
