We were all for giving DANILO D’AIRY a try in the Lincolnshire National at Market Rasen on Boxing Day, but travel problems prevented him taking his chance. This is tougher, but ground conditions are in his favour and if he’s allowed to bowl along in front, he might be hard to catch.
You can put a line through his two pulled-up efforts when last seen out, one being in a competitive novice hurdle that was used as a warm-up for the Eider, where he was well fancied but finished lame.
He’s been given a break since then, but he can clearly go well fresh. His most recent win at Ffos Las has worked out well, and there should be more to come from him this year if over whatever caused his lameness in the Eider.

Nelson River is a sporting pick in the Pertemps Network Leicestershire Silver Fox Handicap Chase. Trainer Tony Carroll seems to lay one out for this meeting every year, and although Nelson River has been below for of late, he is taken to bounce back at a track that suits. A winner of a novice chase over 2m here in February, he did even better when runner-up off a mark of 133 on his next start over the same C&D.
Nelson River has been well held in two runs this season, but is quickly given a chance by the handicapper with an 11lb drop in the weights, and this race looks much more suitable, with a step up to 2½m likely to suit given he was outpaced before staying on to win over shorter for his course victory last term.

Venetia Williams has won the Coral Get Closer To The Action Handicap Chase five times with five different horses since 2013, and she can make it six with the progressive ENZO D’AIRY. The selection returned from a lengthy absence to win over C&D early in the month to beat another well handicapped horse in the shape of Dalamoi, and he remains at the right end of the handicap having gone up a very conservative 6lb for that win.
Enzo D’Airy beat the smart Editeur du Gite as a novice at Ascot, and was able to run off the same mark as for that handicap win here last time, with the assessor giving him some rope due to his lay-off. That looked generous given this horse is still young and progressive, and he still appeals as being more than one step ahead of the handicapper despite his latest revision.

At Hereford, it’s intriguing to see that FLOWING CADENZA has joined Venetia Williams on the retirement of her previous trainer Bob Buckler.
Buckler has had health struggles in recent times and the form of his yard suffered as a result, but Flowing Cadenza provided one of the few bright spots last term when winning at Wincanton in February. She was inconsistent, but I put that down to the stable’s woes, and I think there is plenty more to come from her despite that patchy profile.
Venetia’s horses hadn’t hit form when Flowing Cadenza made her debut for the yard at Chepstow five weeks ago, and she shaped as if needing the run in finishing a 19-length second to Credo.
It would seem a big ask for her to reverse form, but Credo is now 13lb higher in the handicap, and I reckon Flowing Cadenza will improve markedly for the run.
She ought to prove a fair bit better than her current mark of 99, and this looks a good spot for her. The excellent Charlie Deutsch also takes over today, and that bolsters confidence further.

Walk In The Wild has been much improved for joining Gary Moore this season and switching to fences has seen him win twice at Lingfield, both times with a little in hand. Another 7lb rise still leaves him below his initial handicap mark and he has obvious chances of the hat-trick here, but he hasn’t met anything with the potential that OLD PAINLESS has, and I expect Harry Whittington’s 6-y-o gelding to improve for the bigger obstacles today.
Old Painless is a graduate of the prolific Donnchadh Doyle point-to-point academy, winning his only start in that sphere by an easy six lengths at Dromahane in May 2021 (in the fastest time of the day) before selling to Harry Whittington shortly afterwards for £50,000. He has looked a handicap project from the word go, and shaped encouragingly at Market Rasen last time out, finishing third to a couple of potentially classy sorts and well clear of the rest.
Old Painless has got the background and the physique for chasing and the biggest query for me will be the ground, which promises to be quite deep with more rain on the way to Sussex tonight. That said, it was soft at Rasen and he was staying on, which offers hope he’ll be fine on it today, and he can certainly give Walk In The Wild something to think about.
