5:10 Ascot – Celsius

Gelded very early on in his career, his form after a 100+ day break since then reads 115, and the fifth was a decent effort on his seasonal debut at Doncaster last year. He was only beaten half a length from a 12lb higher mark over this C&D last September so is clearly well handicapped, and with the solid pace he needs to come off looking likely with Araifjan in the field, he really ought to be hitting the frame here at worst.

2:20 Brighton – Otago

Brighton’s rollercoaster gets its first outing of the season and the card is the main focus for us on the Pointers today.

The one that jumped off the page in this 7f handicap is Jim Boyle’s Otago, who warmed up for this with a run over 6f at Lingfield at the end of March, a trip that’s on the short side for him these days (both wins last year came at 7f). Held up in rear and outpaced at a key time, he then stayed on steadily in the final furlong and gave the overall impression that not only would the run bring him on (it was his first since the autumn) but a win wasn’t that far away either.

Now 2lb lower than his last winning mark, he’s yet to win at Brighton but acts on the track, and two wins at Epsom show that he goes well on a camber. Plenty in his favour here, with jockey Pat Cosgrave in good form, and we’d have him nearer the front of the market.

1:50 Epsom – Just That Lord

Epsom’s first meeting of the year opens with a dash over the famous five-furlong course, which is the fastest in the world, so it’s appropriate that it is named after a former holder of the world record for the fastest time recorded over 5f, and victory in the Indigenous Handicap can go to Simon Hodgson’s JUST THAT LORD, who goes well fresh, as he showed when winning by a wide margin on his belated return last term. The nine-year-old has the blazing early speed which suits this track, and he’s well drawn out wide where he will get plenty of running room. Hollie Doyle is an excellent booking, and while the stable has been quiet in terms of runners in recent weeks, Hodgson enjoyed an excellent start to the turf campaign in 2021, and his runners are always of interest in the spring.
