Here’s today’s selection

4:20 Hamilton – Glorious Rio

This won’t take a fat lot of winning, and there’s a couple that caught the eye as potential winners on the call yesterday.

The more obvious of the pair is Kat’s Bob, who was a narrow C&D winner two starts ago (from Kilconquhar, a pound better off for a neck, so little in it); connections gave the drop back to 6f from 7f as one of the reasons for the better run, so it was a little bit surprising to see him go back up to 7f for his next start where he weakened out of it in the last half-furlong. Back to 6f here, his chance is there to see if he returns to his earlier form.

Less obvious, but of no less interest, is top weight GLORIOUS RIO. He was third over C&D in a better race than this two starts ago and then, in a competitive 0-85 here last time, ran much better than his finishing position of fifth suggested. The first four home were the four lowest drawn, but he “won” his stands side race after finding more than a bit of trouble, finishing off well under hands and heels when belatedly in the clear.

The winner and second that day were much better class than anything else in that – or this – race and Glorious Rio’s run looks better when they are stripped out of it, shaping pretty much best of the others in the circumstances despite being beaten nine lengths. This represents a hefty drop in class, he’s drawn to get cover while also having an out on either wing, and the excellent Jo Mason wins over three times more often than market expectation when riding for Stella Barclay, which is the clincher in our eyes.

Here’s today’s selection

6:35 Ripon – Fortamour

In the horses-for-courses slot, the most interesting runner of the day is Ben Haslam’s FORTAMOUR who has a C&D record of 33111 and looks the one to be with in the Weatherbys Personalised Gifts Handicap.

The Haslam yard is in pretty hot form at present, with two winners and four places from nine runners in the past two days. Fortamour is coming here in search of a quick hat-trick of course wins, and has had a bit up his sleeve for wins in contrasting conditions in April and May.

He’s off a career high mark now, but is racing in the same grade, and does most of his racing in a better class of handicap than this, making him look a rock-solid option coming out of the same stall as for his penultimate win.

Free Tip – Little Jo has an excellent record

Here’s today’s selection

8:27 Thirsk – Little jo

The first to catch the eye is Magical Mile, in good form this spring with a win at Wetherby in May and two solid placings either side of that, the latest coming over this C&D when, from a middle draw, he was given plenty to do but came home well out wide to grab third late on. Better drawn in stall 14 today, he’s got every chance if ridden a touch nearer the pace, so watch for his late thrust down the outside.

The other to note is Gemma Tutty’s Little Jo, drawn in stall 10, and with an excellent record at class 5 and below at a mile. He needs a straight or left-handed track to show his best form, and his lifetime handicap figures in those circumstances read 121111302. The one poor run in that sequence came when he didn’t handle the sharp bends at Wolverhampton. Rookie trainer Tutty (mum and dad have trained out of the yard in previous years) has had four winners from her last 18 runners, and it’s easy to forgive Little Jo’s latest run at Beverley. He goes well on testing ground, but has form on a range of going at this trip, and is worth backing at the prices even if a downpour would be welcome.

Here’s today’s selection

3:45 Chester – Oh This Is Us

Fools Rush In and Boardman are two of the more obvious ones for this 7½f handicap, but if we’re making Boardman favourite then we’ve got to be looking at an old friend in Oh This Is Us at a bigger price too.

He was, on the face of it, a bit disappointing at Newbury last time but that’s basically him these days, consistency not being his strong point, but his previous length third to Boardman at Haydock would give him every chance on 6lb better terms today.

Drawn nicely in stall 3 today, his Chester record of 11213 reads very well and that makes him look a cracking each-way bet here.

Here’s today’s selection

8:25 Haydock – Macho Pride

The Rhode Island Coffee Handicap looks open, but C&D winner Macho Pride bounced back to something like his best when a good second here five weeks ago, and he’s handicapped to go in again having dropped to an inviting mark.

He was a winner off 75 here last July on ground described as good, and his second place here last time is his only other run in a class 5 handicap on turf. He lost his way on the all-weather over the winter, but is clearly back in the groove, and with the yard in good nick, he demands to be backed from his current perch.

Free Tip – A return to six furlongs for Melayu Kindom will help.

Here’s today’s selection

2:40 Haydock – Melayu Kingdom

Thursday’s racing sees the quality increase a notch, and yet we still find ourselves drawn to a couple of unreliable sorts, hoping they might yet turn a corner, in much the same way as one-nation Tories hope that Boris Johnson might be telling the truth when he says he’s been ‘humbled’ by Sue Gray’s report. They suspect he means ‘rumbled’, but they’ll still give him another chance.

I was very taken by the debut effort of MELAYU KINGDOM at Thirsk last season, and even more so when he rattled home in the Listed 2-Y-O Trophy at Ripon on his next start having blown the start badly. He’s been very disappointing since, doing plenty wrong in his races, but offered more hope dropped to 5f at York last time, despite struggling with the early pace on the Knavesmire, and I’ll take him to fulfil that early promise in the Betfred Good Luck To Huddersfield Giants Handicap.

Melayu Kingdom looked likely to finish last with two furlongs to go at York, but he found his stride belatedly, and weaved through the field to finish a creditable fifth of 15 to Korker.

The return to six furlongs will help now, and while he needs to keep his fiery temperament in check, he’s clearly a very talented performer, and well up to winning at this level if keeping to the straight and narrow.
