Here’s today’s selection

3:15 Hamilton – Ballyconneely Bay

The rain has come at Hamilton, which was being watered every day until yesterday, and is expected to have been hit by more than an inch of rain by the time racing starts on Tuesday. That’s what I’m banking on, and these sudden changes of going can be a boon to the watchful punter.

The first race of interest is the Paycare Health Cash Plan Provider ‘William The Lion’ Handicap in which Ballyconneely Bay could show himself ahead of the handicapper for the in-form Julie Camacho.

Ballyconneely Bay ran very well to be second over C&D in June on dead ground, but disappointed on quicker going here on his most recent run. I’m of the opinion that the son of Fast Company didn’t enjoy the underfoot conditions, and his sire’s progeny have a marked preference for ease underfoot. Given seven weeks off since that rare disappointment, the selection arrives here fresh, and with the rain easing conditions, he should find himself in his element.

His record on good or softer ground now reads 2123, as opposed to 555 on quicker turf, and given he’s been lightly raced, it’s fairly clear that he’s fragile and best kept to an easy surface as a result. His win came on good to soft ground at Pontefract, but Timeform called the going heavy that day, and it’s clear that the more rain which falls, the better will be his chance.

In terms of his opponents, Mark’s Choice jumps off the page given his excellent third in the Great St Wilfrid, and he can race off a much lower mark here given he was out of the weights at Ripon. The problem with backing him is that the majority of his best runs have come at that peculiar track, and while Hamilton is dot dissimilar, Mark’s Choice has only run once in a handicap here, where he was eighth of 10 on soft ground.

Here’s today’s selection

Tilsworth Valerie (1350 Yarm)

There’s been next to nothing in her form this calendar year but a couple of efforts at Chelmsford in the winter suggest she has the merest sliver of ability about her, and if that’s the case, the change of trainer from John Jenkins to the in-form Mike Murphy/Micheal Keady operation could see her take a step forward here.

Not only are the pair in rude form at the present time, they won first time up with Cooperation at Nottingham last week, the horse having seemingly lost his way for Robert Cowell, and was well backed to do so.

On goes a first-time hood (as it was with Cooperation…) and a tongue-tie, and they have gone to the trouble of booking Ali Rawlinson too. It’s interesting to note this will be her first start since the start of June, so they have had some time to work on her, and if they have found improvement then the fact she’s a stone out of the handicap becomes almost an irrelevance.

It may be she’s simply no good and even the trainer change ekes nothing out of her and if that’s the case we’re very sorry and we’ll never mention her again, but if there’s a day to back her, it’s today.

Here’s today’s selection

Asraabb (2015 Chelm)

The daughter of Dark Angel ran very well on debut here having been slowly away, and she finished on the heels of a couple of horses who have run creditably in handicaps off marks in the 70s. She then met trouble when making her effort in a 7f event at Wolverhampton when favourite.

She couldn’t repeat her earlier efforts on her turf bow at Newmarket, but is of much more interest now handicapping, and the assessor has been fairly kind in giving her a mark of 66. That gives her every chance on the bare form she’s shown, but her trainer does well when putting his three-year-olds in handicaps for the first time, and it’s hard to believe that Asraabb won’t improve now switching her attention to handicap company.

Here’s today’s selection

3:15 Curragh – Dubawi Legend

We were keen on Dubawi Legend on Newbury last time out and he ran a cracker, doing most of the donkey work before getting caught late, and he remains unexposed as a sprinter. He’s once again drawn next to Go Bears Go again (both drawn high, which is favoured) and there’s very little between the two. The Irish sprinters really aren’t up to much at present and we think Dubawi Legend can take another step forward here.

Here’s today’s selection

The Golden Cue (1400 Thirsk)

The seven-year-old has always been a modest performer at best, but he wins in his turn granted some ease underfoot, and he shaped as if needing the run on his return at Redcar, leading for almost five furlongs on the wrong part of the track before fading.

The Golden Cue will need to do better to be competitive here, but his draw ought to be a help, as he is between the main pace angles Mops Legend and Sharrabang, and the race should develop around him. Steph Hollinshead is in good form with her handicappers this season, bagging five wins from 25 runs.

A poor end to 2021 saw The Golden Cue slip in the weights, and he is now on a basement mark. He is taking on weaker company here than is usually the case, and with his trainer careful to let him run only when conditions suit, he looks too big at 25/1 (EW) in the betting.

Here’s today’s selection

The Covex Kid (1540 Brig)

Is well berthed in stall 10. The son of Mehmas has done nothing but improve since joining Amy Murphy, gaining form figures of 111321, with the latest a career-best effort to score by five lengths over C&D. That wasn’t a deep contest, but he put up a smart performance on the clock and still appears to be improving.

3.00 FLas – Hiromichi

Had some good form on soft ground to his name in novice and maiden races last year, form that makes him look very reasonably handicapped here, and I’m more than happy to forgive two runs over 1m1f and 1¼m this season as he’s simply looked a non-stayer. Those two runs in June would have got him fitter after a lengthy absence, and he is taken to bounce back to his best for a yard among the winners on Monday
