Here’s today’s selection

5:45 Southwell – Gilded Moon

Haaland beat Aesthetic by 5¼ lengths at Lingfield four days ago, being the beneficiary of a good stop-start ride from Billy Loughnane from the front, and bids to follow up under a penalty here. You can argue a 6lb turnaround in the weights, in company with a longer trip and a track that places more emphasis on stamina might be enough for Aesthetic to turn that around, but we’re of the opinion that she’s not progressing and that scenario is far from a given. Besides, we think GILDED MOON can beat the pair of them now she steps up to a trip more in keeping with her useful pedigree.

Unlike Aesthetic, she’s been making progress with each start, and has definitely improved for headgear on her last two outings, staying on over trips too short for her at Wolverhampton to claim a minor placing each time. Her dam is a half-sister to Gibbs Hill., who stayed 1½m well, and we can see this step up producing more improvement tonight. It’s well worth mentioning Ed Dunlop’s record with his horses over 1½m at Southwell too – a remarkable 7-16 against a market expectation of three winners.
