Nicky Martin’s returners this autumn have generally shaped as if better for a run, with Just Loose Change well beaten at Worcester in September after a break, but a 28/1 winner there four weeks later. My Last Oscar caught the eye at Hereford on Tuesday but faded as if needing the run, and that was also the case with Almost Gotaway at Ffos Las, where he shaped best of all on his handicap debut, only for a lack of peak fitness to find him out from the last.
Almost Gotaway ran very well on his second start over hurdles at Warwick in the spring, leading after the last and overhauled by one coming from further back, and he gives the impression he can develop further with only four lifetime starts to his name.
His trainer believes in a patient approach, and is one to keep on the right side this National Hunt season.
