5:00 Ascot – Summerghand
The Wokingham is the last race we’ve any interest in for this year, and this year’s cavalry charge might not be so much of a charge as usual, as there’s a genuine struggle to work out what might make the pace….
In the end we’ve decided that Apollo One looks the most likely to take them along. That alone would make him of interest, but throw in these facts; he ran to some of his best form on his only run at Ascot (in a tough Group 3), was beaten a neck on his only start in a big-field handicap to date (at Newmarket last summer), and thanks to de la Sayette’s 5lb claim he’s effectively 7lb lower than that today. He’s raced in Listed/Group company for much of his career to date, and this will only be his fifth handicap.
As much as you seek out Chiefofchiefs for the 7f handicaps here, the same applies to SUMMERGHAND when it’s six, and there’s no denying his claims either. Two runs in the Wokingham, have seen him beaten a nose by Hey Jonesey in 2020 and fifth in 2019, both tremendous efforts. They came off marks of 101 and 100, and after some down-the-field runs over the past few months he’s now back down to 101. Given he’s a horse who tends to show his best form when the sun is shining, with his handicap record on fast turf in June/July/August in recent years reading 131542211, it is perhaps no surprise that there were more signs of life at York on his latest start where he was sixth to Dakota Gold. The visor is refitted today, and it wouldn’t be any surprise if he bounced back to some of his best form in a race that clearly suits him well.
