Here’s today’s selection
4:20 Hamilton – Glorious Rio
This won’t take a fat lot of winning, and there’s a couple that caught the eye as potential winners on the call yesterday.
The more obvious of the pair is Kat’s Bob, who was a narrow C&D winner two starts ago (from Kilconquhar, a pound better off for a neck, so little in it); connections gave the drop back to 6f from 7f as one of the reasons for the better run, so it was a little bit surprising to see him go back up to 7f for his next start where he weakened out of it in the last half-furlong. Back to 6f here, his chance is there to see if he returns to his earlier form.
Less obvious, but of no less interest, is top weight GLORIOUS RIO. He was third over C&D in a better race than this two starts ago and then, in a competitive 0-85 here last time, ran much better than his finishing position of fifth suggested. The first four home were the four lowest drawn, but he “won” his stands side race after finding more than a bit of trouble, finishing off well under hands and heels when belatedly in the clear.
The winner and second that day were much better class than anything else in that – or this – race and Glorious Rio’s run looks better when they are stripped out of it, shaping pretty much best of the others in the circumstances despite being beaten nine lengths. This represents a hefty drop in class, he’s drawn to get cover while also having an out on either wing, and the excellent Jo Mason wins over three times more often than market expectation when riding for Stella Barclay, which is the clincher in our eyes.
